Prelude #2, op. 99. Recorded in 1973. Pierre Labric, the titulaire at St. Ouen for many years, is organist. This old (& essentially original) Cavaillé-Coll is, in my humble opinion, an absolutely perfect instrument. As one of the master builder's last works, it represents the culmination of a half-century of refinement of his ideas. And it's located in a superb accoustical environment. Labric's performance takes about the most leisurely pace I've ever heard for this piece, but at St. Ouen, it works.
This is one of the mightiest organ ever to be built - the 64-stop, 4-manual Cavaillé-Coll organ in Rouen, constructed between 1888 and 1890. If you think 64 stops isn't really that much, check out the sound! Watch out in particular for the incredibly powerful 32-foot Bombarde pedal stop towards the end and, shortly afterwards, the Chamades (horizontal Spanish trumpets) turning the volume up yet another ear-splitting notch (Turn up the volume of your speakers to maximum!). Also, watch the video till the end, because after I've stopped playing, you can experience the wonderful acoustics of this great 14th-century church. Especially the 32-foot Bombarde bounces off the walls and hits back at you with brutal force. Thanks a lot to senior resident organist Madame Marie-Andrée Morisset-Balier for pulling out one stop after another throughout the whole piece in order to achieve a wonderful crescendo. The quality of the video is rather poor. It was recorded by my little nephew with a simple digital camera. He was trying desperately to film all the different stops, thus being constantly in the way of Madame Morisset-Balier. So I had to shoo him away from time to time - you can actually hear me doing so. Oh, the piece is called "Mach dich auf mit Jesus", James Mansfield's interpretation of the chorale "Stand up, stand up for Jesus".
